Dr.Ramanna was driving force behind so long called "peaceful nuclear explosion" in May 1974.He himself opened the veil to India's nuclear capability.In pune, Oct 1997 he was asked-" Can India make atomic bomb?".He said -"I can tell you now,1974 was an atom".It made a frontpage headine in all national dailies around the world.Important fallout of his comment was policy makers had to openly acknowledge India's nuclear prowess & capabilities as an "atomic power" & accept responsibilities associated with it.Within in 7 months, India went ahead with a series of nuclear tests at Pokhran in May,1998.Dr Raja Ramanna wil be remembered for his academics as much for his contribution to science of which National Institute of Advanced studies is a living testimony.
I had read that he was father of Indian nuclear research program but now only came to know he was witty & touched heart of all his friends,lover of dogs & excellent pianist.When someone said to him that its difficult to imagine nuclear scientists can be good pianists,he said "They think science is rational,music is irrational;whereas i think both are irrational."
We need more people like this who are intelligent but generous at heart.
